Adopt an Otter Sign-Ups Open for 2022 Season
The Adopt an Otter program is back for 2022 and sign-ups are now open! The program pairs families with players to create a greater sense of community over the summer for our players, while families get to form a lasting connection with their player. Importantly, this is NOT a home stay program. There will be less than 30 players this summer, so those interested in participating can contact Janet Strickland at ottersoccer@gmail.com to get signed up today!
Program coordinator Janet Strickland on what makes Adopt an Otter special: “Most of our players come to us for the summer straight from their colleges, with no break to go visit their families. Even more, some of them haven’t seen their families in a quite a while due to the pandemic and traveling restrictions. They come to Johnson City not knowing anyone. This Adopt an Otter program provides our players with a family away from home. They are paired with a family they can connect with to help them feel like a part of the community, and help them feel a little less homesick!”
To participate, families pay $200 which goes directly towards getting their Otter settled when they get to Johnson City. In return, our adopting families receive:
- One free summer camp registration (June 2022)
- A fact sheet including the player’s bio and favorite foods and drinks
- A t-shirt with the player’s name and number*
- Walk out with your player when they start at Otters home games
*Additional t-shirts for the family can be purchased as well
What is asked in return is that you make your Otter feel welcome during the summer. Many choose to bring their players goodie bags with their favorite things after games throughout the season. Some have chosen to have their Otter over for games and dinner, take them out for ice cream, or have a cookout. The Otters organization and players are thankful for whatever adopted families choose to do.
