The Otters earned their first draw of the season after a 1–1 result Sunday afternoon at TVA Credit Union Ballpark. The Otters got on the board late in the second half after Guillermo Segovia (Florida Tech) muscled a defender off the ball and caught the keeper off his line with an inch-perfect shot into the corner. Virginia Beach were able to equalize early in the second half after an initial save from goalkeeper Mars Gohier (Florida Southern) fell to a Virginia Beach attacker. Despite 20 shots on the day, the Otters were unable to find another goal, leaving the final score 1–1. The Otters were able to generate several chances in the first half with both fullbacks, Henrik Guenther (ETSU) and Danny Talisuna (Florida Tech), getting forward to send in crosses to attackers. The Otters continued to press United and Segovia was able to turn the ball over deep in their own territory and whip the ball in for the Otters first goal.
Virginia Beach settled into the game as it progressed, creating chances of their own but failed to challenge Gohier or put the chances on frame. However, a turnover by the Otters in the 55th minute forced Gohier to make a tough save. Unfortunately, the deflection fell to Virginia Beach forward that was able to slot it past Gohier and Jan Gruhn (Shorter) for the equalizer.
From that point on, the backline of Guenther, Gruhn, Talisuna, and Matt Skinner (UNCG) dealt with countless attacks allowing debutant Tom Tzabari (Duquesne) to get attackers forward.
Spurred by fresh legs off the bench, the Otters continued to create opportunities in the final ten minutes. Danilo Seglio (Loyola Maryland) was able to get Djibril Faye (Radford) 1-v-1 with the keeper before being forced off the ball. Minutes later, Seglio drew a free kick in a dangerous spot. The ensuing kick by Agu Ortiz (Anderson) hit the crossbar and bounced down towards goal but failed to cross the line. The Otters final chance came in stoppage time after a header by Kendall Allen (U-Indy) found Lars Brinkman (UIS) at the back post, but it went just wide.
